ROOF FLASHINGS

One of the most important components of a watertight roof system are the roof flashings, which are fabricated metal pieces installed where the roof transitions to a wall, chimney, perimeter edge, skylights, or rooftop equipment. These flashings can be made of many types of materials, although aluminum, steel, and copper are commonly used. Due to the longevity and durability of steel and copper, Cornett Roofing utilizes these materials for flashings that we believe are best suited for these applications.

There are several types of roof flashings that are utilized on the roof and around various components. Below are the most common types:

  • Step Flashing – This is primarily installed against the sides of a wall or chimney and a piece of metal is placed under each metal panel, shingle, or slate piece to block water from running down the wall and under the roof.
  • Counter Flashing – While having a similar appearance to step flashing, the counter flashing metal is sawed into an existing mortar joint, going over the top of the brick and under the roofing, preventing water entry.
  • Apron Flashing – Commonly used around penetrations or wall bases (such as a chimney or dormer), apron flashing is a L-shaped piece of metal that protects the 90-degree angle transition.

Cornett Roofing’s metal and copper fabrication experts take great care to ensure these vital components are in good condition or installed correctly if being replaced.
