Transforming Grace United Methodist Church

Cornett Roofing Systems was honored to be selected to re-roof the major sections of Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin, Indiana. The existing shingle roof on the church was aging, weathered, and had several noticeable defects, including granule loss, missing and broken shingles, rusting flashings and gutters, and algae staining. These defects would have continued to worsen over time, possibly resulting in expensive structural damage and other problems.

A new, high-quality Cornett metal roof was selected by the church as a replacement, for both economic and aesthetic reasons. Since a Cornett metal roof can be installed on top of wooden batten bars, the old shingle roof did not have to be removed, saving significant labor costs and debris in the local landfill. In addition, Cornett Roofing had the fabrication expertise to repair damage to the steeple spire base, which had been leaking and compromised. Finally, after touring our manufacturing facility, the church administration loved the unique look of our metal panels and the 50 year warranty that comes with them.

Grace United Methodist selected our Metal Shake Series panel, in the Colonial Slate color, with Cornett’s patented, protective powder coating granules applied. Each panel was made, inspected, and packed at Cornett’s manufacturing facility, before being brought to the job site and installed.

The roofing process for the church involved laying a protective layer of roof underlayment over the old shingles, installing the wooden batten bars, and then attaching the individual metal panels to the bars. The panels were cut and bent precisely for use along the perimeter edges, around the steeple, and in the dormers, ensuring a watertight seal on all parts of the roof. Finally, the ridge and hip caps were installed, before new gutters were added to complete the project.

The project itself presented several challenges, including the steep slope of the roof, the need to connect the metal roof with other building features, and the complicated detail work required to repair damage around the steeple spire. New lights were installed on the spire as well during the project.

The Cornett Roofing crew worked diligently over a 3-week period to transform Grace United Methodist Church, installing a custom metal roof that is as durable as it is visually appealing.

The Grace United Methodist church elders made the wise decision to invest in a permanent roofing solution that will provide many decades of leak-free service, without the future worries of hail and wind damage. In addition, they purchased a modern version of a classic roof style that enhances the beauty of the church and signals to the city that an exciting and vibrant community worships inside!
